Nicholas J Maskalick was embraced by God , at the age of 93, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Nicholas was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Anna Maskalick, brother John Maskalick, step brother John Nahomenuk, as well as his son David (survived by Kathleen) Maskalick.
He is survived by his loving wife , Margaret (Ashbaugh, Bronder), whom he cherished for 47 years, as well as children: Deborah Bond, Gregory (Gail) Maskalick, Patricia (Thomas) Hawkins, Anne Andersen and Lynn Bronder, along with ten grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nicholas had a career as a Senior Research Scientist and Inventor, after graduating with his Masters in Chemistry from Temple University, through the GI Bill, after serving in the Army. His last research position, which he held for 30 yrs, was with Westinghouse Electric Corporation Laboratories in Churchill, PA. Nicholas has many patents and inventions to his credit, mainly related to fuel cells.
Nicholas challenged himself, well into his nineties. Over the years, he ran long distances, biked and hiked. In recent years, he would swim a mile, at least three times a week or walk through his neighborhood, in any weather.
Nicholas also took pride in the multi-story decks he built, “to last”, onto his house. From them, he could look out at the city houses of his Mt Washington neighborhood, which he loved. He also maintained beautiful flower gardens and grew a variety of tomatoes at his home.
During his retirement, he assisted others with their gardening with tips and instruction. One special place where he shared his talents was St Paul’s Monastery, where he worshiped almost daily, when he was able.
Nicholas enjoyed discussing world events and loved seeing and hearing from his family, both near and far.
Nicholas will be greatly missed by those who have known and loved him, and who have had the good fortune to be able to call him Husband, Dad, Pap, Uncle, Cousin and friend.
